Caring for your dreadlocks
Starting from your installation-
You are able to wash your dreadlocks after a few days, browse shampoo options here.
Washing instructions-
Thoroughly wet your dreadlocks and apply a small amount of your shampoo to your scalp and lengths, massage in and leave for 2-3 minutes, thoroughly rinse using fresh running water (if possible)
Conditioner can be used for your mids and ends when your dreadlocks start to mature- this will help retain moisture within your hair.
Once finished with your cleanse, gently squeeze the excess water from your dreadlocks (do not twist your dreadlocks whilst squeezing as this can result in breakage)
Wrap your dreadlocks in a towel to soak up any excess water, whilst your hair is damp apply Jojoba and/or rosemary oil to your scalp and dreadlocks, focusing on your mids and ends.
This helps keep the natural oil within your hair, resulting in less breakage and damaged hair.
Keeping your hair healthy is crucial for having healthy dreadlocks.
Whilst your hair is damp this is the perfect time to do some palm rolling on your dreadlocks.
Palm rolling is when you put your single dreadlock between your two palms, starting at your roots and rolling it vigorously whilst slowly working your way down to the ends of your dreadlock.
This process helps to keep formation and structure of your dreadlocks, whilst keeping in those loose hairs that will inevitably come loose from your dreadlocks- especially in the early weeks/ months!
Drying instructions-
To dry your dreadlocks I recommend using a hair dryer, starting at your roots and working your way down to the ends. This can take a while depending on the length, maturity level and thickness of your dreadlocks. (Try to wash your hair early in the day, to give time to dry!)
Getting them dry as soon as you can is important, leaving your hair wet can result in your dreadlocks smelling damp, breakage and an unhealthy scalp.
I recommend to never sleep with wet hair, do not tie your dreadlocks up whilst wet.
Sleeping with dreadlocks-
When it comes to sleeping with dreadlocks, I recommend using a Satin Sleep Bonnet or a Satin Pillow Case.
These help to keep your dreadlocks tidier for longer, causing less friction than a traditional pillow case resulting in less breakage and frizz.
They also help retain moisture and natural oils within your hair, due to the materials.
Satin Pillowcases are also great for your skin!
Styling your dreadlocks-
When your dreadlocks are still young, try to keep them down as much as possible.
Tying them up too frequently whilst they’re young can result in weak spots, unlocked areas and uneven locking during the early stages.
When applying beads and wraps, I recommend to wait until your dreadlocks have matured more and filled out, to not disturb the locking process and cause weak spots.
I recommend to move your beads up and down the lock and to different locks every so often to not create weak areas and broken/ damaged hairs.
For a lasting scent on your dreadlocks-
Grab yourself one of our Dread Craft Hair Perfumes, after smelling this- it’ll sure be your go-to product!
Never use wax in your dreadlocks!
Wax is not water soluble and will ruin your dreadlocks, leaving a sticky residue that will attract dirt and dust, being unable to be washed out.
